Son of a japanese father and an american mother he was born in Los Angeles. He lived in Japan until he was 14 years old and then went to live in the USA. Both in his personal life and in his work Isamu Noguchi, the sculptor, blend Oriental with Occidental culture. In his youth he worked as an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum, creator of the Gigantic portraits of american president's sculpted in Mount Rushmore in South Dakota; in Paris he worked with the rumanian abstract sculptor, Constantine Brancusi. In the 30's he travelled extensively in the Far East studying calligraphy in China and ceramics and landscape gardering in Japan. He was worked with the most diverse materials such as bronze, marble, wood, granite, paper, bone and wire. In addition to his sculture, he has created gardens, squares, monuments and fountains as well as stage settings for masters of contemporary dance such as George Balanchine, Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham.
