Mart Stam
Dutch architect and urban palnner; he was born
in Purmered in 1899. An exponent of Constructivism
he then became a collaborator of J.J.P.
Oud and joined him in the Functionalist movement.
He studied drawing at the Royal School
for Advance Studies in Amsterdam and specialized
in the firm of Grand Moliere Verhagen and
Kok in Amsterdam. From 1920 to 1924 he lived
in Germany and Switzerland. In 1927 he went
to Dessau where he studied urban planning at
the Bauhaus. He became director of the Advance
Institute of Art in Berlin in 1950. Since 1953
he lived in Amsterdam. Among his most important
works there are: the Theosophical Church
in Amsterdam (1926, in collaboration with L.C.
Van Der Vleicht and J.A. Weissenhoe) and the
Van Nelle Tobacco Factory in Rotterdam. We
must also mention the "Cloud Pillar" project; office
buildings which were to be constructed on
imposing pillars straddling an important urban
thoroughfare. For one year, in 1924, he was director
of the magazine "ABC".
